Nyaope- South Africa’s hidden pandemic.

11 August, 2021Articles, News

Nyaope continues to embed itself in our cities and low-income communities. There are many misconceptions regarding it- what is it? Where did it come from? How is it used? What are the effects? As a result, there are many myths about the drug and it is difficult to find accurate information, as few formal studies have been done on it.

Nyaope has been around for a long time, and has gone by many names depending on where you are in the country -sugars, whoonga, pinch or nyaope are most commonly used but basically, they all refer to a low-grade heroin, cut with other ingredients to bulk up the heroin- a process that would be similar to watering down alcohol. Common additives are- baking soda, sucrose, baby powder, laundry detergent and sometimes rat poison (strychnine). In this way, dealers are able to stretch the heroin, making it very cheap, which is why it has become such a problem in the low-income communities.

Nyaope can be smoked with marijuana or it can be freebased on its own. It can also be diluted and used intravenously. Most users start off smoking it and generally graduate to intravenous usage. This is because addicts build up a tolerance to the drug and in order to get the same effect they experienced in the beginning, they begin to inject rather than smoke nyaope. Injecting nyaope results in a more intense ‘high’, but tolerance continues to build and the potential for overdose becomes a reality.

Nyaope is physically addictive and withdrawal can be painful and physically uncomfortable. Some of the symptoms include;

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Severe muscle aches
  • Diarrhoea
  • Stomach cramps and pain
  • Body cramps
  • Insomnia
  • Cold sweats
  • Fever
  • Runny nose

The fear of withdrawal symptoms causes an intense craving for heroin, resulting in the user doing whatever it takes to avoid the side-effects. When detoxing from nyaope it is important to note that a medical assistance is recommended. Stopping “cold turkey” could result is serious negative consequences to your physical health.

Communities are being held hostage by the nyaope epidemic. The youth gripped by an addiction to nyaope, resort to crime and prostitution ensuring they are able to get their next high. What started for many young adults as experimentation and a method of escaping their socio-economic circumstances, has become a full-blown addiction. A generation of youth, fearful of getting help due to their apprehension surrounding withdrawal symptoms.

Tik – When to get help.

04 August, 2021Articles, News

Tik is the South African street name given to crystal methamphetamine. It is a highly addictive and dangerous stimulant that acts on the central nervous system, increasing alertness, attention and energy. Tik users become addicted or dependant soon after experimenting with it as the effect is an intense “rush” and feeling of self-confidence and euphoria. This euphoria can last for hours and when it begins to wear off, it leaves the user feeling irritable, depressed which then drives the addict to use again in order to avoid these uncomfortable feelings.

Tik is an odourless substance found either in crystals or a finer powder form. It is usually white or brownish in colour and sold in small bags or straws. Tik can either be snorted, smoked or injected. Smoking is the most common method of use. It has gained enormous popularity as it cheap and easily available on the streets.

Tik is a potent stimulant which takes effect immediately, whether injected, smoked or snorted. The effects produced include:

  • Increased alertness
  • Intense feeling of happiness or euphoria
  • Increased sense of activity or energy
  • Increased feelings of self-confidence or self-esteem
  • Loss of appetite
  • Increased sex drive
  • Increased sense of contentment or satisfaction.

More noticeable and destructive side-effects as a result of excessive and long-term use include:

  • Decreased appetite resulting in significant weight loss
  • Mood swings, irritability and depression
  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia) and loss of energy
  • Loss of interest in hobbies or social interactions (isolation)
  • Stomach and muscle cramps
  • Damage to nervous system resulting in tremors in hands, arms head and legs
  • Excessive itching of the skin
  • “Meth Mouth” – deteroration and decay of gum and teeth

As a result of the intense and sudden effects produced, dependence is achieved rather quickly. The severity of of the physical withdrawal symptoms and psychological cravings lasts long after the tik user has stopped using, even months later the user could still have cravings for tik. This leaves the user trapped in a cycle of using, coming down and seeking tik again. This compulsive need to use despite the consequences is an indication that addiction may be present

Signs of tik abuse or addiction may include the following:

  • Personal health deteriorating
  • Work or studying performance suffering
  • Loss of appetite and erratic eating patterns avoiding food and then binge eating
  • Decrease in social interactions and or isolation
  • Erratic sleep patterns and sleep deprivation
  • Drastic mood swings or changes
  • Financial instability or constant lack of finances

Usually when a tik addict has reached this stage, and the finding and using of tik has become the primary activity, there is a need for treatment. Detox is usually required, followed by treatment for the disease of addiction, which assists and aids the addict in gaining the tools to live a sober and clean life free from the addiction to tik.

If you or a loved one need assistance with an addiction to tik – know that help is readily available. The road to recovery is not always an easy one but getting yourself or your loved one the best possible care from the team at Crossroads Recovery Centre, provides you with a map to sober, healthy living. No matter how bad things seem, there is hope and it is a phone call away. Marijuana & Alcohol

28 July, 2021Articles, News

As legalisation spreads, more Americans and South Africans are becoming heavy users of marijuana, despite its links to violence and mental illness. The best data concerning the scope and effects of marijuana & alcohol use comes from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).

The survey asks about problems users believe they have encountered because of their use. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) consolidates the answers to estimate how many would meet the clinical criteria for dependence (2.8 million) or abuse (an additional 1.4 million) set down by the Diagnostical and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (commonly referred to as the DSM-V). SAMHSA makes these calculations for all substances in an effort to estimate the nationwide need for treatment for each substance.

137 million people self-reported current alcohol use,of which 17.3 million described enough problems to meet the criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence, equivalent to one instance of alcohol abuse or dependence per 7.9 current users, or 13% of current users — significantly lower than the corresponding ratio for marijuana.

In 2012 the Treatment Episode Data Set recorded 681,374 treatment admissions for which the primary substance of abuse was alcohol and 305,560 for which it was marijuana or hashish. That works out to 15 admissions for every 1,000 current marijuana users versus only 5 for every 1,000 alcohol users.

What is clear is that, in individual cases, marijuana can cause psychosis, and psychosis is a high risk factor for violence. What’s more, much of that violence occurs when psychotic people are using drugs or alcohol. The drug they are most likely to use is marijuana. The most obvious way that it fuels violence in psychotic people- is through its ability to cause paranoia. In people with psychiatric disorders, paranoia can fuel violence.

A 2012 paper in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence, examining a federal survey of more than 9,000 adolescents, found that marijuana use was associated with a doubling of domestic violence in the U.S.A.. A 2017 paper in the journal Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, examining drivers of violence among 6,000 British and Chinese men, found that drug use was linked to a 5-fold increase in violence, and the drug used was nearly always cannabis.

Get Help from a Trusted Rehab Centre

02 June, 2021Articles, News

There seems to be a stigma attached to the idea of going to rehab. The way that drug and rehab centres are portrayed in the media, certainly does not help in breaking that stigma. And the reality is that if you have not had a direct encounter with someone who has been through the rehabilitation process, the idea of going to a drug and rehab centre for help, may be daunting. In reality, rehabs are places of hope.

For Individuals Struggling with Drug Problems

Getting clean off drugs and alcohol is not a process that can be undertaken on your own. If you have taken the first step towards getting clean by admitting that you have a problem, the next step is to reach out for help. Getting professional help in the form of counselling and addiction treatment is the beginning of an all-important journey towards building the future you deserve.

No one expects anyone with a drug or alcohol problem to recover overnight. Recovery is a process that happens one day at a time – a process that involves both internal and external changes. Those changes take willingness, courage and help from people who understand both the harm that addiction can cause and the joy that recovery can bring.

The professionals who assist addicts at drug and rehab centres, have experience. To put it simply, they have seen it all and many of them have done it all. They understand what addicts and alcoholics go through and how their disease can be arrested before it’s too late. The reality is that if you are still alive and the choice to go to a drug and rehab centre is available to you, you are one of the lucky ones. There is hope for everyone – at any age and at any stage of your journey.

For Family Members, Friends or Concerned Associates

The choice to admit a loved one, friend or colleague to a drug and rehab centre may be a difficult one to make. You may have reservations about whether they will be in good hands and whether the process will produce long-term results. If you have those kinds of reservations, good – it shows that you have deep concern for the addict or alcoholic concerned and that you will most likely want to make an informed decision about what the next step should be.

One of the most important things to understand about the nature of addiction is that it is not a disease that can be arrested in isolation. The best chance any addict or alcoholic has, it to be surrounded by individuals who can relate to their experience – people who have walked the recovery path and who can attest to the fact that life after drugs and alcoholics is worth living. For that deep level of experience, you can turn to the professionals, knowing that you are amongst individuals who consider their jobs to be a way in which they can give back to society and help those in need.

If you or a loved one needs assistance with an addiction – know that help is readily available. The road to recovery is not always an easy one, but getting yourself or your loved one the best possible care from the team at Crossroads Recovery Centre provides you with a map to sober, healthy living. No matter how bad things seem, there is hope, and it’s only a phone call away. If you or anyone close to you needs help with an addiction to sex, gambling, substances, alcohol or food, please contact us for a free assessment.
