What is Tik?

30 September, 2022Articles, News

Tik is the street name given to crystal methamphetamine; this is what makes Tik so highly addictive and dangerous. Tik is a stimulant that increases alertness, attention and energy. Tik users become addicted or dependent as the effect is an intense “rush” and a feeling of self-confidence and euphoria. This hyperactivity can last for hours, when the effect of tik wears off it often leaves the tik user feeling irritable, and tired, along with a sense of depression or glum mood which drives the tik user to use it again to avoid the uncomfortable feeling of coming down.

What does Tik look like?

Tik is an odourless substance found either in crystals or a finer powder form usually white or brownish in colour and is sold in small bags or straws. Tik can either be snorted, smoked or injected. Tik is most commonly smoked. Tik is popular as it’s cheap and easily found on the streets.

What is Tik addiction?

Tik addiction develops when the need to continue using is increased as the artificial sense of happiness and euphoria is gone as a result of the sudden onset of withdrawals as a result of the “come down” from the high.

The difficulty of physical withdrawal and psychological cravings lasts long after the tik user has stopped using,  months later the user could still suffer from cravings for tik, leaving the tik user trapped in a cycle of using, coming down and seeking tik again. This compulsive need to use despite the consequences is an indication that addiction may present,

Who can help me with porn addiction?

23 September, 2022Articles, News

Porn addiction is a behavioural addiction, closely related to other process addictions like gambling disorder. Just like substance abuse, it can have severe consequences on one’s life. If you or someone you know is struggling with porn addiction, seeking help is crucial for recovery.

Understanding Porn Addiction

Porn addiction is a form of behavioural addiction, categorised alongside other process addictions like gambling disorder. These compulsive behaviour patterns involve individuals engaging in activities despite the negative consequences that often follow. Just as with substance addictions, such as drug or alcohol abuse, people often begin experimenting with porn out of curiosity, seeking pleasure. However, over time, this experimentation can evolve into a reliance on porn to fulfil their sexual needs. Similar to substance addiction, individuals may find themselves needing more explicit material to satisfy their urges, spiralling deeper into the addiction. The long-term effects of porn addiction can be profound, impacting various aspects of one’s life.

Effects on Relationships and Intimacy

Frequent porn use can detrimentally affect the quality of intimate relationships. For instance, it can make it challenging for individuals to experience arousal in response to sexual stimuli other than porn. This diminishing responsiveness can lead to a steady decline in sexual and emotional intimacy within couples. Porn addiction can significantly increase the risk of infidelity and jeopardise long-term relationships. Additionally, the consequences of porn addiction may extend to financial problems and job loss, further exacerbating the negative impact on an individual’s life.

Impact on Teenagers

It’s important to note that the harmful effects of porn addiction are not limited to adults. Shockingly, research reveals that children encounter porn as early as 11 years of age. The long-term impact of porn addiction on teenagers can be particularly distressing. It can stunt their natural sexual development, create unrealistic expectations about sex, elevate the risk of early pregnancies and STDs, contribute to child pornography issues, distort body image perception, and intensify technology dependence.

Treatment Options for Porn Addiction

If you suspect you may have a compulsion or addiction to porn, it’s crucial to seek help. Consulting with a therapist is an excellent first step. They can assess your situation and develop a personalised treatment plan for addiction recovery, including substance abuse treatment. Therapists may recommend individual, group, or family counselling, depending on the specific impact of porn addiction on your life.

Support Groups for Addiction Recovery

Many individuals find solace in discussing their struggles with others who have firsthand experience with the same issue. Consider seeking information about local support groups for pornography or sexual addiction through a primary care physician, mental health professional, or local hospital.

Medication as a Treatment Option

While treatment for behavioural addictions primarily involves talk therapy and cognitive-behavioural therapy, medication may be recommended if you have coexisting conditions, such as depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Consequences of Untreated Porn Addiction

Leaving compulsions or addictions untreated can lead to destructive consequences in various aspects of life. Romantic and sexual relationships may deteriorate due to poor relationship quality, lower sexual satisfaction, and decreased self-esteem. Career and financial stability can be jeopardised if responsibilities are ignored or obligations are missed, particularly if porn is viewed at work, potentially resulting in disciplinary action.
