Addiction Recovery in Johannesburg and Pretoria

Substance abuse is a pervasive issue that affects individuals from all walks of life. For many caught in its grasp, the road to recovery may seem daunting and uncertain. However, in the vibrant cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria, hope and healing await at rehabilitation centres dedicated to breaking the chains of addiction.

Understanding Addiction Recovery

In the journey to overcome addiction, understanding the role of rehabilitation centres is crucial. These centres are havens of support and transformation, offering tailored programmes  designed to restore individuals to health and normalcy.

Rehabilitation Centres: A Beacon of Hope

The definition of rehabilitation, as per the dictionary, is “the action of restoring someone to health or normal life through training and therapy after imprisonment, addiction, or illness.” In the context of addiction, rehabilitation centres serve as beacons of hope, guiding individuals toward recovery and a return to a fulfilling life.

Can Rehabilitation Centres Help with Addiction?

One common question that arises is whether rehabilitation centres can truly help individuals struggling with addiction. The resounding answer is yes. However, before embarking on this journey, there are several crucial considerations.

Factors to Consider Before Seeking Help

  1. Recognizing the Problem: The first step is acknowledging the issue. What makes you believe that you or a loved one is grappling with addiction? It’s essential to identify the signs and symptoms.
  2. Understanding the Substance: Different substances can lead to addiction, be it alcohol, drugs, or other harmful behaviours. Understanding the specific addiction is vital for effective treatment.
  3. Family History: A family’s history of addiction can increase the risk for individuals. Knowing the family’s background can provide valuable insights.
  4. Treatment History: Have you or your loved one sought treatment in the past? Understanding previous experiences can help tailor the approach to recovery.
  5. Motivation for Seeking Help: Finally, what has prompted you to seek help now? Understanding the driving force behind seeking assistance is essential for successful rehabilitation.

Types of Rehabilitation Centres

Rehabilitation centres are not one-size-fits-all; they are diverse and cater to various needs. In the context of addiction, two prominent types of centres come to the forefront: drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres and psychiatric centres.

1. Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centres: These centres are specialised in addressing addiction to drugs and alcohol. They often follow established programmes, such as the 12 Step programme, including Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. These programmes focus on community support, helping individuals stay clean and sober, and adopting healthier lifestyles. The emphasis is on personal responsibility and choices.

2. Psychiatric Centres: Some psychiatric centres also offer programmes tailored to addiction. These programmes can be spiritual but not necessarily religious, aligning with the principles of community support and personal transformation. However, they may differ in their approach from traditional 12 Step programmes.

3. Faith-Based Facilities: For some, faith-based facilities that follow religious programmes may be a suitable option. The choice between these different approaches depends on the individual’s preferences and beliefs.

Screening and Assessment: The Key to Effective Rehabilitation

The effectiveness of rehabilitation depends on the individual’s compatibility with the chosen facility. Therefore, thorough screening and assessments are essential. These evaluations help determine if the individual is best suited for the specific facility, ensuring they receive the most appropriate and effective care.

In the vibrant cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria, rehabilitation centres stand as beacons of hope and healing for those battling addiction. With a wide range of programmes and approaches available, individuals can embark on a journey of recovery, breaking the chains of addiction, and rediscovering a healthier, more fulfilling life. If you or someone you know is struggling with alcohol abuse or addiction recovery, consider reaching out to one of these rehabilitation centres in Johannesburg or Pretoria to start the path to recovery and healing.

What is the best therapy for gambling?

05 August, 2022Articles, News

For the most part, gambling in moderation is socially acceptable behaviour. Gambling addiction is another story. If left untreated, a gambling addiction can negatively affect your financial situation, relationships, and other aspects of your life very similar to substance addictions.

Gambling addiction falls into the category of process addictions. The brain of a gambling addict responds in the same way that an alcoholic’s brain responds to drinking. The more a gambling addict feeds their habit the worse it becomes. Process addictions are particularly difficult to treat as it is not a matter of abstaining such as the case of substance addiction but learning how to healthily engage with money.

With gambling addiction, the addicted person gets relief and release from the activity of gambling. If you have a gambling addiction, you may feel an uncontrollable urge to buy lottery tickets, visit casinos, play slot machines, bet on sports, or gamble online. The frequency of gambling addicts’ behaviour may vary but in general, they are unable to control that behaviour. A gambling addict will continue gambling, even in the face of negative social, financial, or legal consequences.

People with addictions are often very secretive about their condition, but more often than not gambling addiction is very difficult to conceal. Gambling addicts require frequent access to casinos and online gambling sites. Even if a gambling addict gambles in the comfort of their home, the gambling addict’s addiction may start to show itself in other areas.

If you have a gambling addiction, you may display some of the following behaviours:

  1. Failing to control your gambling
  2. Neglecting bills and expenses and using the money for gambling
  3. Obsessing over any type of gambling
  4. Taking bigger and bigger risks while gambling
  5. Stealing money to gamble
  6. Feeling guilty after a gambling session
  7. Avoiding work or other commitments to gamble
  8. Gambling to feel better about life
  9. Selling possessions to gamble
  10. Lying about your gambling habit

You may also experience the following consequences from your gambling addiction:

  • Disintegrating relationships or friendships
  • Loss of house, job, car, or other personal possessions

With the right treatment gambling addiction can be managed. Unlike food addiction, a gambling addict doesn’t require the object of their addiction to survive but needs to develop a healthy and balance relationship with money.

People with gambling addiction don’t always gamble frequently. But when they do start gambling, they may be unable to stop.

Programs to help with a gambling addiction:

Inpatient

Gambling addiction is a serious condition that can destroy lives. Although treating a gambling addiction can be challenging, many people who struggle with compulsive gambling have found help through professional treatment mostly in the inpatient gambling rehab setting. The structured environment afforded by an inpatient program has proven helpful in treating gambling addiction.

An inpatient gambling rehab programme may be especially helpful if the gambling addict is unable to avoid casinos or other gambling venues without help. Removing the gambling addict from their home environment and going into an inpatient gambling rehab program offers a break from the world and allows the gambling addict to face their underlying causes and conditions related to their addiction. Compulsive gambling addiction is not related to morality or values issues it is fraught with complex motivations and often related to trauma of some sort.

Outpatient

An outpatient program may also be useful in treating a gambling addiction. An outpatient program consists of one-on-one counselling session and group therapy sessions whilst one continues to live at home, work and attend school. Treatment approach often depends on the severity of the disorder.

12 Step

Gamblers Anonymous (GA), or other 12-step programmes, may also help a gambling addict overcome their gambling addiction. This type of program may be especially helpful if the gambling addict can’t afford more intensive rehabilitation options. It follows the same model as Alcoholics Anonymous, helping the gambling addict build a support network of other recovering gambling addicts. The gambling addict may meet with group members one or more times per week.

Other

Some gambling addicts opt to seek treatment solutions in cognitive behavioural therapy, psychotherapy and medication.

It’s important that a gambling addict quits gambling completely. Occasional gambling can lead to a relapse. A program of recovery can help a gambling addict develop impulse control.

Like any addiction, compulsive gambling can be difficult to stop. The gambling addict may find it embarrassing to admit that they have a problem, especially since many people gamble socially without developing an addiction. Gambling addiction is treated with similar methods as other addictions.

Crossroads Recovery Centre has specialist staff and programmes that help to deal with these complex issues. Crossroad’s process is a 12-step program which is specifically focused on the problem of gambling.

Family support is also an integral part of the treatment and Crossroads runs a family support group every second week to help the family members and loved ones going through the process.

Treatment for gambling addiction may involve an outpatient program, inpatient program in a gambling rehab depending on the severity needs and resources. Treatment for substance abuse, depression, anxiety or any other mental health disorder may be part of your treatment plan for a gambling addiction.

If you or a loved one or friend is experiencing problems with a gambling addiction, please contact Crossroads Recovery Centre.

Addiction Recovery and Alcohol Abuse Rehabilitation Centres in Johannesburg

Addiction recovery is a critical journey for those battling dependence on psychoactive substances like alcohol, prescription drugs, and street drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, heroin, or amphetamines. The primary goal is to empower individuals to confront substance dependence and halt substance misuse, thereby preventing the numerous psychological, legal, financial, social, and physical consequences that may ensue.

Recovering from an alcohol use disorder demands dedication, time, willpower, and a strong support system. When you make the decision to enter a professional alcohol and drug treatment programme, you embark on a transformative journey through four distinct stages of rehab recovery: Treatment initiation, Early abstinence, Maintaining abstinence, and Advanced recovery. These stages, originally developed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse for healthcare providers, are also a valuable framework for those seeking recovery from alcohol addiction. Remember, recovery is an ongoing process.

Effective treatments for addiction include Detoxification, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Contingency Management, 12-Step Facilitation, and Medication-assisted treatment. These evidence-based treatments are widely used in rehabilitation centres throughout Johannesburg, offering individuals the support and tools they need for lasting recovery.

While there are various paths to recovery, one that has shown enduring positive outcomes is participation in 12-Step and mutual/self-help groups. These groups, including Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), have played a pivotal role in behaviour change for many individuals. They serve as a complement to formal treatment and provide ongoing community support after treatment.

The Twelve Steps, originally conceived by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), serve as a spiritual foundation for personal recovery from the effects of alcoholism. These steps are valuable not only for those struggling with alcohol but also for their friends and family in Al-Anon Family Groups. The 12-step approach is adaptable and has been effectively applied to various addiction recovery programmes. For many, these steps are not just a means to overcome addiction but also a roadmap to a new way of life.

Twelve-step facilitation therapy, commonly known as “12-step programmes,” is a powerful tool for addressing alcohol and substance abuse. This form of group therapy recognizes the multifaceted negative consequences of addiction—social, emotional, spiritual, and physical. It begins with acceptance, progresses to surrender to a higher power, and encourages active participation in group meetings. programmes like Alcoholics Anonymous leverage group meetings for open discussions and mutual support.
