What is Nyaope?

04 November, 2022Articles, News

White powder in a Brown plastic bag.
Plastic bags can be also green, blue, black or even yellow in colour.

Plain rubbish! White powder in a brown plastic bag.

What it can do

The effects and the harm it causes is complete chaos, destruction and fatality. It’s really shocking to know that a brown plastic bag with powder inside can wreck so much havoc and destroy someone’s life that much faster.

The high is so effective that it knocks one away from reality and coming off Nyaope is extremely elusive, that countless attempts are a failure and the addict has no choice but to continue using, continue making means and ways to get it and continue using until the addict dies.

A basket case, that’s what Nyaope turns one into. The Nyaope addict is more at risk of living on the streets and becoming a hobo if he or she doesn’t die sooner, or is arrested and does jail time.

The consequences of Nyaope

The consequences of using Nyaope are horrifying – Nyaope is the perfect definition of disaster.

Nyaope is deadly and the user is willing to cheat, steal, con, lie and manipulate to get Nyaope. Regardless of the consequence of these actions, the addict will act out no matter what.  Heavily hooked, won’t bare the pain of not having to use it in any form be it injecting it, foiling it or even smoking it.
Brain damage or sends one to an early grave faster, that’s the reality of its impact.

No drug is better but Nyaope is a cold and deadly drug.

Crystal Drugs in South Africa

28 October, 2022Articles, News

When referring to Crystal drugs in South Africa, it is most likely to be Crystal Methamphetamine also commonly known as “Tik”.  Crystal meth can be smoked using a glass pipe, snorted, ingested, and injected intravenously. It has become a popular party drug and has rapidly spread across South Africa. As the drug has gained popularity, the clear and obvious negative consequences associated with addiction have increased.

How does crystal drugs affect the body?

To understand why Crystal drugs in South Africa is so popular, it is important to know how the drug affects the body. When Crystal Meth is taken it produces an intense feeling of euphoria, this state of euphoria is often described as more intense than cocaine. Usually, the price of Crystal Meth is a lot less than that of cocaine making a better option for the user, this means more “Tik” can be used for lower price.

The high produced by Crystal Meth, produces an intense, unnatural boost of dopamine in the brain. This causes a strong desire to continue using the drug to maintain the high.

Some of the signs of Crystal Meth use are:

  • Disrupted sleep patterns / insomnia
  • Weight loss
  • Skipping meals
  • Delusional behavior
  • Hallucinations
  • Paranoia
  • Tooth decay
  • Constant itching

Most of those addicted to Crystal Meth experience some form of psychosis. Psychosis can be described as a disconnect from reality. There is a distortion in what they perceive as real, they experience feelings of paranoia, experiencing hallucinations and hold onto false ideas even though they are provided with evidence.

Crystal Meth is highly addictive and almost always leads to symptom of Substance Use Disorder (Addiction). If you are concerned for someone that is using, it is important to seek out professional help. Those trapped in addiction are never able to see how bad their situation is.

How is the Tik drug taken

21 October, 2022Articles, News

What is Tik?

Methamphetamine (tik) is the second most widely illicit drug world-wide. Tik is a highly addictive synthetic psychostimulant that increases energy and feelings of euphoria. Tik is an odorless, crystal-like substance, with the street names speed, Ice and straws.

The different ways Tik can be taken

Smoking:

Methamphetamine (tik) is primarily smoked using improvised glassware, by using a straw in a light bulb called a “lolly”. The crystals are heated in a bulb/pipe and inhaled. The tik powder or crystal is placed in a light bulb and the user smokes the fumes.

Ingested:

This is quite straightforward, the Tik is directly ingested through the mouth but because the user never knows exactly what he is using even an experienced user can accidentally over-dose.

Injected:

The Tik is diluted with a small amount of water and injected using a syringe directly into the veins. When a user first starts injecting a small amount of the drug is enough to produce an intense rush and euphoria. But as tolerance builds up more and more of the drug is needed to produce the same high. Injecting carries the most severe consequences for the body, such as infection, heart problems and the risk of stroke.

Snorting:

Tik is crushed into more of a powder form and snorted using a short straw, rolled up bank note or piece of paper. The high from this is less intense than injecting or smoking, but still has consequences to the body. Damage to the septum, continuous runny nose and damage to the naval cavities.

In conclusion:

Smoking and injecting produce the quickest and most intense “high” and are generally the most common ways of using Tik. Because of the intensity of Crystal Meth it has become a favorite in the party scene but with Tik things can change very quickly and what started as recreational use moves on to addiction. If you are concerned that a loved one could be struggling with Tik, it is important that you seek out professional help. Concerns can usually be confirmed with physical evidence such as syringes, glass pipes, rolled up bank notes or cut straws.

Take the First Step Towards Recovery

Seeking support for managing anxiety in early recovery? Reach out to our Pretoria Centre for compassionate care and effective strategies.

Let Us Guide You Towards Sobriety

There are a few ways to test for these drugs:

  • Urine Test
  • Blood Test
  • Saliva Test
  • Sweat Test
  • Hair Test

The most used test is a urine test. It requires the subject to produce a urine sample and then the drug test will be dipped into the urine to see if any drugs are present. The variations of drugs that can be tested for is dependent on how many panels are on the test. The duration that a drug can be picked up in a urine test is dependent on the type of drug, how long you have used it, and how much you have taken.

Other factors that determine how long any drug can stay in each individual’s system:

  • Metabolism – Individuals that have a high metabolism naturally use up substances that they put into their bodies more rapidly than those who have a slow metabolism.
  • Body Mass and Hydration – Overweight individuals take longer to process drugs. This is because drugs can hold onto fatty tissue in the body. Naturally thin or fit individuals tend to have higher metabolisms and therefore drugs leave their bodies more quickly.
  • Duration and amount of drug use – Long-term and heavy drug users have higher amounts of substances in their bodies than those who only abuse a substance of choice occasionally.

Cat drug’s chemical name “Methcathinone” forms part of the amphetamine family. It stays in your system for about 2 to 3 days. Each person reacts to drugs differently, so it makes sense that drugs clear from their body at a different rate.
