What Does a Drug Recovery Treatment Programme Entail?

09 July, 2020Articles, News

Recovery from addiction in any form is a process that cannot be done in isolation. That’s a lesson that many recovering addicts have come to learn and appreciate. For many, recovery begins with going through a rehabilitation process that may involve a recovery treatment programme.

It is often the case that clients arrive at treatment centres with a preconceived notion about what rehabilitation is. Many of them feel fearful and apprehensive about the process. While it is true that indeed it can be a challenging process, many addicts also find it to be an enlightening and uplifting process – one that could indeed change the course of their lives.

At Crossroads Recovery Centres, we apply a range of therapeutic methodologies in the treatment of addiction, but at the crux of our recovery treatment programme, is the Narcotics Anonymous programme which includes 12 fundamental steps. These steps form the basis of a new way of life for many recovery addicts. They include coming to understand one’s powerlessness against addiction in any form, taking inventory of aspects such as guilt, shame and resentment and making amends to people whom the addict may have hurt.

The 12 steps offer a simple, spiritual, not religious way to recover from drug addiction, one day at a time. As part of the recovery treatment programme at Crossroads Recovery Centres, we ensure that clients are introduced to the 12 steps during their stay.

We recommend a minimum stay of 28 days, during which clients will be expected to complete the first 3 steps in writing, as well as a life story. Clients who stay for an additional 28 days will be expected to complete steps 4 to 8. Finally, clients who stay for the full duration of 84 days, will complete all 12 steps as part of the programme.

Upon leaving the treatment centre, clients will have the option of attending 12-step meetings that are relevant to their particular addiction. In this regard, there are a number 12-step fellowships around the world for various kinds of addictions like drugs, sex, gambling and food addiction.

Are There Drug Rehabilitation Centres in Gauteng?

04 June, 2020Articles, News

Like many other parts of the world, South Africa is faced with a growing drug addiction problem. Year on year, the statistics continue to show that drug addiction effects not only the lives of those who are addicted, but their families, friends and associates. It is not uncommon to hear that the majority of South Africans will either be directly or indirectly affected by the disease of addiction in their lifetimes. Fortunately, advancements in technology and the ubiquitous nature of social media means that more and more people can be made aware of the fact that rehabilitation from addiction is both possible and effective.

In Gauteng specifically, one of the most well-equipped and efficiently staffed drug rehabilitation centres is Crossroads Recovery Centre. This rehab facility is situated in the green belt of Boskruin in the north of Johannesburg. Its close proximity to the idyllic Boschkop Nature Reserve makes it the ideal place to take a break from the stressors and pressures of life to focus on recovering on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level.

The double storey villa that is located on the property can accommodate up to 17 patients comfortably, with access to recreational spaces. The rehabilitation centre itself is equipped with ample individual and group therapy rooms as well as spaces for workshops and other therapeutic activities. The main lounge features a cosy fireplace and there is a large table tennis area on the patio, where clients can relax, socialise and recover in a space that is safe, secure and conducive to wellbeing.

At Crossroads Recovery Centres, the therapeutic staff recommends a minimum stay of 28 days. During this time, clients will be expected to finish the first 3 steps of the their relevant 12-step programme. The 12 steps are widely applicable to a range of addictions including drugs, alcohol, sex, love and gambling. Clients will also complete their life story and share it with the group – a task that may seem daunting but is imperative in dealing with issues of the past in order to move forwards towards a fully-functional future. Ideally, clients in the rehabilitation programme will stay at the facility longer and build a solid foundation upon which they can find a new way to live in the world, clean and sober.

Are There Any Rehab Centres in Pretoria?

28 May, 2020Articles, News

Drug abuse in Pretoria has increased to alarming levels over the last decade, and unfortunately, there is a definite shortage of services in the city to help addicts to find recovery. The police and other governmental authorities are inundated with drug-related cases and drug-trafficking rings. One of the biggest drug problems that Pretoria is being faced with right now, is the dramatic surge in the use of a drug known as “nyaope.” Nyaope is a cocktail of various ingredients; the primary active ingredient being low-grade heroin, which is cut with various other substances such as methamphetamine to bulk up the weight and price of the product. Media reports trace its origin to the Soshanguve and Mamelodi townships in Pretoria, in the early 2000’s . Other commonly used drugs in Pretoria include heroin and crack cocaine (or what is also known as the rock drug).

Crossroads Recovery Centres is based in Pretoria and Johannesburg. These rehab facilities are run by teams of trained professionals which include doctors, nurses, consulting mental health professionals and counsellors. Crossroads Recovery Centres are not just treatment centres for drugs and alcohol. Their teams are ready and equipped to deal with a range of other addictions include gambling addiction, sex addiction and food addiction. The methods for treating these various addictions is fundamentally the same although the content of each program may differ slightly to ensure that addicts are informed about their disease and equipped with the tools that will benefit them in their unique set of circumstances.

The Pretoria Recovery Centre is situated on a two-hectare property in Rietvalleirand. The rehab’s residence is surrounded by lush gardens and designed to provide a tranquil place of refuge for addicts who are entering recovery. This particular rehab centre can accommodate up to 24 patients at a time in a therapeutic community. The rehab facility includes individual counselling rooms, a large group therapy room, recreational areas and rooms that are well-equipped for comfortable living. The facility includes an indoor braai area and courtyard, a swimming pool, a poolside gazebo, an exercise area with equipment and a table tennis and games area. Patients who are admitted at Crossroads, are admitted to a rehab that is truly dedicated to the wellbeing and happiness of all of its patients.

What is the Purpose of Drug Rehabilitation?

18 May, 2020Articles, News

Treatment centres like Crossroads Recovery Centres offer a program of drug rehabilitation that includes a number of different components. One important thing to understand about rehabilitation from any kind of addiction is that every person experiences it in a different way. The desired outcomes however, are universal. Treatment is purposed towards helping the addict to deal with their core issues, accept life as it is and look forward to a better future. The ultimate purpose of rehabilitation therefore, is to restore the recovering addict to a state pf physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being – a state in which they will be able to re-enter the world and rebuild their lives.

Drug rehabilitation is unique from other forms of rehabilitation in that it may involve a detox program as part of the process. The length and nature of this detox process will depend on a number of factors including which substance the addict was using, for how long he/she was using and in which quantities the drug was being used. A detox programme is different for each individual. Sometimes addicts can be introduced to the therapeutic community directly without having to spend time in a dedicated space that is set aside for detox. At other times, they may be secluded to a specific wing of the treatment centre where they can be monitored more closely.

After the detox process has commenced and the recovering addict is stable enough to interact with other patients, he/she will be introduced to the therapeutic team and treatment community. Group therapy is an important part of the drug rehabilitation program, as well as individual counselling, which will help to unearth core issues and bring to light some of the issues that the addict may never have been wiling to confront. This takes place in a safe and secure environment and is facilitated by professional counsellors.

Therapy is supplemented by information sessions, life skills workshops and an introduction to 12-step fellowships such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Being familiarised with these 12-step fellowships is a key ingredient to successful treatment. For many, it is the bridge between treatment and the world outside the doors of the facility.
