Rehabilitation Centres

29 October, 2021Articles, News

“Rehab” – is a word that has the potential to conjure up a range of mixed emotions. Unfortunately, due to the stigma around addiction, rehabilitation centres can have a negative perception attached to them, which may deter people from initiating the process. What we aim to do in this article is to outline some of the aspects of an inpatient programme as a way of preparing potential clients and their families for the process of recovering from an addiction.

Detox and Withdrawal

Depending on the type and quantity of the substances that a client has used, he/she will undergo a detoxification process as the body withdraws from the effects of drugs and alcohol. The extent of this detox varies from person-to-person. What you can expect is that a medical physician will be appointed to the client, to monitor their wellbeing and ensure that the physical side effects of withdrawal will be minimised. Choosing to detox without medical supervision may be fatal. Quitting “cold turkey” can lead to serious issues such as seizures and severe dehydration.

Information Sessions

Clients who book into rehabilitation centres will be empowered through knowledge around aspects such as the disease theory of addiction, what life in recovery entails as well as the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual impact of addiction. During these sessions, clients will have a chance to engage with their peers and ask questions in an open and inclusive forum. Awareness alone however, is not the key to long-term recovery, which is why rehabilitation centres take a multi-pronged approach to treatment.

One-on-One Counselling

Every client is assigned a counsellor at the onset of his/her treatment process. That counsellor will guide the client through the recovery process, talk about deep-seated issues and help to unpack their addictive thought patterns. Clients respond differently to counselling. While some may be resistant to the process, it quickly becomes clear that opening up and sharing with someone who can be trusted, is integral to getting and feeling better.

Group Therapy

Group therapy involves a counsellor or group facilitator hosting a session in which clients are invited to participate. Active participation is encouraged. In this environment, clients can challenge each other, share their experience and learn from the experience of others. Group therapy has proven extremely effective in the treatment of addiction.

Introduction to the 12-Step Fellowships

After treatment, one of the most effective ways of staying clean and sober and finding a new way of life, is found in the rooms of Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous. South Africa has strong fellowships within NA and AA, with members who are readily available to provide free support for people who have entered recovery. Rehabilitation centres will ensure that clients attend these meetings during treatment in order to start building valuable connections with others in recovery.

These aspects of the rehabilitation process are not exhaustive. Our programme is comprehensive and based on years of experience and collective expertise in the field. If you or a loved one are battling an addiction and need assistance – know that help is readily available. The road to recovery is not always an easy one, but getting yourself or your loved one the best care from the team at Crossroads Recovery Centre, provides you with a map to sober, healthy living. Rehabilitation options in Johannesburg

15 September, 2021Articles, News

When searching for a rehabilitation centre for yourself or a loved one it can be daunting from the start. The terminology, the variety of options, the medical jargon can be intimidating and difficult to navigate. In this article we will break down the rehab options that are available in Johannesburg.

The first important distinction is to choose between inpatient or outpatient treatment, these are the most common options for rehabilitation treatment. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, deciding what is right for you is completely dependent on your personal needs and circumstances, there is no one size fits all.
Inpatient treatment is completed while staying at a rehabilitation centre. All activities take on the premises and clients are constantly supervised. While in inpatient treatment clients are isolated from the outside world, with no need to work, study or fulfil other obligations.
Whilst in inpatient treatment a client’s sole responsibility is to focus on their recovery. Clients who choose this treatment option typically receive more intense therapeutic intervention than those who choose the other rehabilitation options. Clients are consistently supervised, limiting their access to drugs or alcohol, this gives them some safety and security withing the first few weeks of their sobriety. As far as rehabilitation options go, inpatient is the gold standard. Many people are intimidated by this option because it is the most time consuming and expensive option there is, but the quality and level of care received is far superior to the other options. With regards to the fees regarding this form of treatment, it is important to remember that this option is covered by medical aids as a prescribed minimum benefit, this means that even the most basic hospital plan allocates benefits for this type of rehabilitation.

The other most popular option for rehabilitation is outpatient treatment, this type of treatment takes on a variety of forms. When it comes to rehabilitation the most popular form of outpatient treatment is a schedule that runs over the course of a few weeks, and usually consists of group therapy as well as individual counselling. Every outpatient program runs slightly differently, having different time requirement and schedules. Most programs that fall within this category have the big advantage of participants being able to still perform their daily responsibilities, such as work, studies and family commitments. Outpatient does however have its disadvantages as an option for rehabilitation. Because clients are not isolated from the temptations of the outside world while their recovery is still fragile,
many clients report struggling with craving and giving into the temptation of their previous lives. If this option seems right for you, it may be wise to consider that this option is more challenging for clients, as recovery is not their single priority and that because less hours are
dedicated to it the work that is done in this time is less substantial.

There is however a third option, many clients choose to first undertake inpatient rehabilitation and once having completed that program, transfer to an outpatient program. This allows the benefits of both, as well as a smoother integration into their previous lifestyle, while still being supported and held accountable.

Crossroads Recovery Centre in Johannesburg offers both options for rehabilitation. Contact us for advice on how to best proceed with your recovery. If you or anyone close to you needs help with an addiction to sex, gambling, substances, alcohol or food, please contact us for a free assessment. Nyaope- South Africa’s hidden pandemic.

11 August, 2021Articles, News

Nyaope continues to embed itself in our cities and low-income communities. There are many misconceptions regarding it- what is it? Where did it come from? How is it used? What are the effects? As a result, there are many myths about the drug and it is difficult to find accurate information, as few formal studies have been done on it.

Nyaope has been around for a long time, and has gone by many names depending on where you are in the country -sugars, whoonga, pinch or nyaope are most commonly used but basically, they all refer to a low-grade heroin, cut with other ingredients to bulk up the heroin- a process that would be similar to watering down alcohol. Common additives are- baking soda, sucrose, baby powder, laundry detergent and sometimes rat poison (strychnine). In this way, dealers are able to stretch the heroin, making it very cheap, which is why it has become such a problem in the low-income communities.

Nyaope can be smoked with marijuana or it can be freebased on its own. It can also be diluted and used intravenously. Most users start off smoking it and generally graduate to intravenous usage. This is because addicts build up a tolerance to the drug and in order to get the same effect they experienced in the beginning, they begin to inject rather than smoke nyaope. Injecting nyaope results in a more intense ‘high’, but tolerance continues to build and the potential for overdose becomes a reality.

Nyaope is physically addictive and withdrawal can be painful and physically uncomfortable. Some of the symptoms include;

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Severe muscle aches
  • Diarrhoea
  • Stomach cramps and pain
  • Body cramps
  • Insomnia
  • Cold sweats
  • Fever
  • Runny nose

The fear of withdrawal symptoms causes an intense craving for heroin, resulting in the user doing whatever it takes to avoid the side-effects. When detoxing from nyaope it is important to note that a medical assistance is recommended. Stopping “cold turkey” could result is serious negative consequences to your physical health.

Communities are being held hostage by the nyaope epidemic. The youth gripped by an addiction to nyaope, resort to crime and prostitution ensuring they are able to get their next high. What started for many young adults as experimentation and a method of escaping their socio-economic circumstances, has become a full-blown addiction. A generation of youth, fearful of getting help due to their apprehension surrounding withdrawal symptoms.

If you or a loved one need assistance with an addiction to nyaope – know that help is readily available. The road to recovery is not always an easy one but getting yourself or your loved one the best care from the team at Crossroads Recovery Centre, provides you with a map to sober, healthy living. No matter how bad things seem, there is hope and it is a phone call away. Rehab in South Africa: A Look at How the Process Works

20 July, 2021Articles, News

For many of us, the only reference we have on how the process of rehabilitation works, comes from television. It is a process that has a reputation for being difficult and deeply challenging. Some may fear entering the process because of a prevailing perception that it requires significant change, which is a daunting prospect for anyone. That’s why we deem it so important to demystify the process, so that those who are struggling with addiction can reach a place of hope and realise that treatment is simply the beginning of a journey that takes place one day at a time. Change comes gradually, and although the process is not easy, getting clean is the beginning of a new, more fulfilling life. In this article, we break down the process of rehab in South Africa into four main components.

Detox

The first step in the process of rehab in South Africa, is to detox. The process of detoxing will vary from person-to-person because different substances have different effects on the body and mind. Each person’s detox process will be guided by a medical practitioner, who will be able to administer any form of treatment that may be required. Those who are entering rehab for a process addiction like porn addiction, may not need to go through the detox process but may enter the next phase of treatment immediately. Every patient’s needs are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Group Therapy

Learning to talk about feelings in an open and honest forum is an important step in the process of rehab in South Africa. Group therapy has proven to be an indispensable tool for personal development. Facilitators or counsellors will guide each group by suggesting a topic or by stimulating discussion and sharing. Some patients engage immediately with the process of group therapy, while for some, trusting others may take time. The most important thing to remember is that group therapy meets individuals where they are, allowing everyone to participate at their own pace.

One-on-One Therapy

Each patient will be paired with a counsellor upon entering the treatment process. Individual counselling sessions tend to go deeper than group therapy sessions in that counsellors may wish to help the individual to unearth some of the deep-seated issues that may be unresolved. Over time, each individual, forms a valuable connection and bond with their counsellor. Apart from being qualified, specialised addiction counsellors – all our counsellors are in recovery from addiction themselves and thus have personal knowledge of where addiction is capable of taking a person. This facilitates the process of trust between client and counsellor.

12-Step Fellowships

What happens after rehab is just as important as what happens during treatment. For this reason, at Crossroads Recovery Centres, we introduce recovering addicts to 12-step fellowships like Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous in the hopes that after treatment, clients will decide to immerse themselves fully in the recovery journey. These fellowships provide an indispensable support network that helps to guide the individual towards finding a new way to live without the use of addictive substances and behaviour.

These four stages are some of the bastions of the rehab process, but the list is in no way exhaustive. There are other components that may form part of treatment, including life skills workshops, yoga, meditation, craft classes and similar forms of therapy.

If you or a loved one needs assistance with substance abuse or alcoholism – know that help is readily available. The road to recovery is not always an easy one but getting yourself or your loved one the best possible care from the team at Crossroads Recovery Centre, provides you with a map to sober, healthy living. No matter how bad things seem, there is hope and it’s only a phone call away.
