BASIC REHABILITATION OPTIONS AND RECOVERY

27 October, 2021Articles, News

Rehabilitation is a process that begins with abstinence and requires deep mental, emotional and spiritual change. For addicts struggling with substance abuse, entering rehab may be a daunting proposition but for thousands of people who go on to lead successful lives after active addiction, it is the beginning of a long-term solution. There are a number of rehabilitation options for substance abuse in South Africa. Some addicts turn to religion for the answer while others turn to psychiatry and alternative medicine for help. At Crossroads Recovery Centre, we believe that the most effective option is a combination of a number of therapeutic techniques and the integration of 12-step recovery.

A 12-step programme is a set of principles that assists people suffering from alcohol abuse and addiction by providing action steps, which will guide them into a life of recovery.

In 1939, Alcoholics Anonymous published its original 12-step method of recovery from alcoholism in the book Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered from Alcoholism. Many programmes have started as offshoots of the original Alcoholics Anonymous programme. These problems include all addictions and support groups for families affected by addiction /alcoholism.

In 12-step drug treatment programmes, recovery is discussing the effects of addiction—physical, emotional, mental and spiritual—and responding with specific actions.

Dimensions of a 12-step programme:

  • Step work: Doing written work from a 12-step guide book, which will help you to progress through the 12 Steps.
  • Sponsorship: “A sponsor is simply another addict, who has completed the 12 Steps in his or her recovery process, and is willing to share their experience with another member and guide them through the Twelve Steps as they were guided.”
  • A group setting: The 12 steps of recovery are discussed and members share their personal experience strength and hope with each other.
  • Higher power: A personal concept of a power greater than yourself and your addiction that can help you to recover.
  • Service: Being of service to others as referred to by the 12th step.

The 12-step programme serves as a guide to spiritual growth and fills the void created by addiction and gives an opportunity for a better way of life.

The 12 Steps

  1. Admitting our problem: We admitted we were powerless over our addiction, that our lives had become unmanageable.
  2. Finding hope: Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
  3. Surrender: Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of a power greater than ourselves.
  4. Take personal inventory: Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
  5. Sharing your inventory: Admit to a higher power, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  6. Becoming ready: Were entirely ready to have a higher power remove all these defects of character.
  7. Humility: Having the humility to ask for help with our shortcomings.
  8. Making a list of amends: Make a list of all those we have harmed and make amends to them all.
  9. Make amends: Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
  10. Continue inventory: Take a personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
  11. Conscious contact with a higher power: Through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious and contact with ourselves, humanity and/ a higher power.
  12. Helping others: Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps we try to carry this message to alcoholics/addicts and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Rehabilitation options in Johannesburg

15 September, 2021Articles, News

When searching for a rehabilitation centre for yourself or a loved one it can be daunting from the start. The terminology, the variety of options, the medical jargon can be intimidating and difficult to navigate. In this article we will break down the rehab options that are available in Johannesburg.

The first important distinction is to choose between inpatient or outpatient treatment, these are the most common options for rehabilitation treatment. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, deciding what is right for you is completely dependent on your personal needs and circumstances, there is no one size fits all.
Inpatient treatment is completed while staying at a rehabilitation centre. All activities take on the premises and clients are constantly supervised. While in inpatient treatment clients are isolated from the outside world, with no need to work, study or fulfil other obligations.
Whilst in inpatient treatment a client’s sole responsibility is to focus on their recovery. Clients who choose this treatment option typically receive more intense therapeutic intervention than those who choose the other rehabilitation options. Clients are consistently supervised, limiting their access to drugs or alcohol, this gives them some safety and security withing the first few weeks of their sobriety. As far as rehabilitation options go, inpatient is the gold standard. Many people are intimidated by this option because it is the most time consuming and expensive option there is, but the quality and level of care received is far superior to the other options. With regards to the fees regarding this form of treatment, it is important to remember that this option is covered by medical aids as a prescribed minimum benefit, this means that even the most basic hospital plan allocates benefits for this type of rehabilitation.

The other most popular option for rehabilitation is outpatient treatment, this type of treatment takes on a variety of forms. When it comes to rehabilitation the most popular form of outpatient treatment is a schedule that runs over the course of a few weeks, and usually consists of group therapy as well as individual counselling. Every outpatient program runs slightly differently, having different time requirement and schedules. Most programs that fall within this category have the big advantage of participants being able to still perform their daily responsibilities, such as work, studies and family commitments. Outpatient does however have its disadvantages as an option for rehabilitation. Because clients are not isolated from the temptations of the outside world while their recovery is still fragile,
many clients report struggling with craving and giving into the temptation of their previous lives. If this option seems right for you, it may be wise to consider that this option is more challenging for clients, as recovery is not their single priority and that because less hours are
dedicated to it the work that is done in this time is less substantial.

There is however a third option, many clients choose to first undertake inpatient rehabilitation and once having completed that program, transfer to an outpatient program. This allows the benefits of both, as well as a smoother integration into their previous lifestyle, while still being supported and held accountable.

Crossroads Recovery Centre in Johannesburg offers both options for rehabilitation. Contact us for advice on how to best proceed with your recovery. What is Tik?

08 September, 2021Articles, News

Tik is a highly addictive psychostimulant that is commonly used as a party drug, but because of its fast-acting, highly addictive nature, many people are finding themselves addicted to it. Tik is the street name for crystal methamphetamine. It is also known as ice, glass or meth. It resembles shiny rocks or crystals with a glass-like appearance. Over recent years there has been a sharp increase in its use resulting in many people becoming addicted to the drug. Tik is most commonly smoked using a glass pipe, it can be ingested, snorted or injected.

Tik has been around for a long time, it is a man-made stimulant that was given to soldiers during WW2 to keep them awake and alert. It has been used for weight loss and to ease depression, but currently there is no legal use for the drug. Crystal methamphetamine/tik produces a euphoric rush, it also creates a feeling of confidence and increased energy. Tik causes dopamine to flood the pleasure/reward centre of the brain. Users of the drug once hooked, chase the rush they felt in the beginning. Continued use also builds tolerance in the user which means they need to start taking more of the drug to get the same high.

Some of the signs of tik use are:

  • Obsessively picking at hair or skin.
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss.
  • Dilated pupils and red eyes.
  • Strange sleeping patterns — staying up for days or even weeks at a time.
  • Jerky, erratic movements; twitching; facial tics; animated or exaggerated mannerisms; and constant talking.
  • Borrowing money often, selling possessions, or stealing.
  • Angry outbursts or mood swings.
  • Psychotic behavior, such as paranoia and hallucinations.

There are serious consequences from using tik, and the long-term effects can be devastating. Someone who wants to come off crystal methamphetamine must seek professional help. The withdrawal from tik is psychological and the craving and need to use can be overwhelming.

If you or a loved one needs assistance with an addiction to tik – know that help is readily available. We have an experienced team which includes medical staff to assist with safe medical detox where necessary. The road to recovery is not always an easy one but getting yourself or your loved one the best possible care from the team at Crossroads Recovery Centre, provides you with a map to sober, healthy living. How to Choose a Drug Rehab Centre in Johannesburg

03 September, 2021Articles, News

Whether you are looking to check yourself or a loved one into a rehab centre, there are a number of factors to consider. With emotions running high and time being of the essence, choosing a drug rehab centre in Johannesburg can be daunting. Here are a few key aspects to look out for when making this important decision.

A Medical Detox Programme

The initial, physical part of detoxing and staying abstinent from drugs and alcohol, is often the hardest part. Depending on the type of drug that has been abused and the extent to which it has been used- every patient experiences detox differently. Some addicts and alcoholics experience extreme physical withdrawals while others struggle with what may feel like an intense mental battle. In every case, choosing a drug rehab centre in Johannesburg that has an extensive medical detox programme is key.

Trained and Experience Counsellors

In most cases, patients will be assigned to a specific counsellor who will provide guidance and therapeutic treatment on an individual level. When choosing a rehab, it may be useful to consult with the available counselling team and ask questions that will help to allay your fears and provide much-needed assurance that you are making the right decision.

Therapy Groups

An effective and reputable drug rehab centre in Johannesburg will provide for a number of therapeutic groups as part of its treatment program. These groups may be topical or open-ended. They are designed to help the addict or alcoholic to understand the pain that their addiction is causing themselves as well as those around them. Therapy groups are also important spaces in which the addict can feel free to express themselves and relate to people who understand what they are going through.

A Relapse-Prevention Programmes

One very important part of treatment for drug addiction is the prevention of relapse programme. It is of the utmost importance for addicts to be prepared to face the real world and be assimilated back into life after treatment. A professional drug rehab in Johannesburg will provide recovering addicts with relapse-prevention programmes that include specific precautions, routines and commitments, to ensure that the addicts recovery is sustained in the long term.
