Where are the best treatment centres in Johannesburg ?

11 June, 2020Articles, News

There are a number of rehabilitation centres in Johannesburg, each with their own model of how to treat addiction. At Crossroads Recovery Centres, we take a number of approaches to treatment, including group therapy, individual counselling, peer support programmes and goal-setting groups. However, what sets Crossroads Recovery Centre apart as one of the best rehabilitation centres in Johannesburg, is the application of the 12 steps as the foundation of recovery.

During the treatment process, clients will be introduced to the 12-step programme that coincides with their particular addiction. These 12-step fellowships host a number of meetings throughout the city, some of which include meetings for drug addicts, meetings for alcoholics, meetings for co-dependents and meetings for sex and love addicts. The 12 steps is a tried and tested method of recovery that subscribes to the disease model of addiction. An introduction to the 12 steps is one of the critical tools needed to live a life free from addiction. Why? Because it helps the addict or alcoholic to build an invaluable support network before they leave treatment. This support network for many, is indispensable.

Group therapy takes many different forms, For example, at Crossroads Recovery Centres, therapists host a number of different groups that focus on different issues. Process groups for example, are facilitated by an addictions counsellor. They are spaces within which addicts can become vulnerable and share their story with peers who relate completely to what they are going through. There are also spiritual groups, where counsellors address a number of issues related to spirituality. It is important to note that as one of the leading rehabilitation centres in Johannesburg, Crossroads Recovery Centre is not affiliated with any one religious or spiritual group. Like 12-step fellowships, which are spaces that are open to anyone from any religious or non-religious group, Crossroads Recovery Centres is not prescriptive about what clients should believe. Instead, the centre offers guidance and encouragement, helping addicts to connect with themselves, the world around them and their beliefs- drawing strength from those beliefs in learning how to live free from the clutches of addiction.

Are There Drug Rehabilitation Centres in Gauteng?

04 June, 2020Articles, News

Like many other parts of the world, South Africa is faced with a growing drug addiction problem. Year on year, the statistics continue to show that drug addiction effects not only the lives of those who are addicted, but their families, friends and associates. It is not uncommon to hear that the majority of South Africans will either be directly or indirectly affected by the disease of addiction in their lifetimes. Fortunately, advancements in technology and the ubiquitous nature of social media means that more and more people can be made aware of the fact that rehabilitation from addiction is both possible and effective.

In Gauteng specifically, one of the most well-equipped and efficiently staffed drug rehabilitation centres is Crossroads Recovery Centre. This rehab facility is situated in the green belt of Boskruin in the north of Johannesburg. Its close proximity to the idyllic Boschkop Nature Reserve makes it the ideal place to take a break from the stressors and pressures of life to focus on recovering on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level.

The double storey villa that is located on the property can accommodate up to 17 patients comfortably, with access to recreational spaces. The rehabilitation centre itself is equipped with ample individual and group therapy rooms as well as spaces for workshops and other therapeutic activities. The main lounge features a cosy fireplace and there is a large table tennis area on the patio, where clients can relax, socialise and recover in a space that is safe, secure and conducive to wellbeing.

At Crossroads Recovery Centres, the therapeutic staff recommends a minimum stay of 28 days. During this time, clients will be expected to finish the first 3 steps of the their relevant 12-step programme. The 12 steps are widely applicable to a range of addictions including drugs, alcohol, sex, love and gambling. Clients will also complete their life story and share it with the group – a task that may seem daunting but is imperative in dealing with issues of the past in order to move forwards towards a fully-functional future. Ideally, clients in the rehabilitation programme will stay at the facility longer and build a solid foundation upon which they can find a new way to live in the world, clean and sober.

Can You Detox at an Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre in South Africa?

20 March, 2020Articles, News

Alcoholism, like substance abuse and other forms of addiction, is a progressive disease that can have fatal consequences. Fortunately, those who suffer from alcoholism today have more access than ever before to information on the disease and how it can be treated. The team of professionals at Crossroads Recovery Centres has years of collective experience in working with alcoholics and helping them to walk the path to recovery. More often that not, that process begins with a supervised detox.

If you are wondering whether it is possible to detox at an alcohol rehabilitation centre in South Africa, the answer is yes. In fact, a rehab centre is one of the safest places to go through detox from alcohol abuse.

Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal vary from person to person, but these symptoms can be quite severe. Mild symptoms begin to show up as early as 6 hours after a drink and can include headaches, anxiety and nausea. In extreme cases symptoms can include high blood pressure, heavy sweating, heart palpitations and even delusions. For this reason, it is advisable for an alcoholic to seek professional help with the detox process, such as Crossroads Recovery Centres.

The process of detox at an alcohol rehabilitation centre in South Africa should be facilitated by a medical practitioner such as a doctor or nurse. It is important that the patient’s vital signs be monitored regularly and any complications treated timeously in order to make the process as bearable as possible. Alcoholics who have a history of heart or lung disease are particularly vulnerable to severe withdrawal symptoms and are therefore advised never to detox alone, but to seek the guidance of a professional who can make sure that their medical conditions do not worsen during the process of withdrawal.

Many alcoholics may be apprehensive about entering an alcohol rehabilitation centre in South Africa, for fear of what withdrawal will entail. However, the life that awaits on the other side of binge drinking is one to look forward to. Taking the first steps and checking into rehab to detox, is the all-important action that will help an alcoholic to find a new way to life, free from the clutches of active addiction.

What is the Admission Process for Rehabilitation Centres?

18 March, 2020Articles, News

The choice to enter treatment for alcoholism or addiction is often a choice that goes beyond the addict or alcoholic. Ultimately, the addict or alcoholic must be willing enough to enter treatment, but more often than not it requires family and friends to get involved and offer support. The professionals who work at rehabilitation centres like Crossroads Recovery Centres, are familiar with the intricacies of this process and are trained to handle each case on an individual basis.

The admission process for rehabilitation centres differs from case to case, depending on the circumstances under which the addict or alcoholic is admitted to treatment. On occasion, the family or friends of addicts and alcoholics can arrange for a staged intervention with a counsellor from a treatment centre or a member of a 12-step fellowship. Interventions are designed to confront the addict or alcoholic with the reality of their disease, the consequences of their behaviour and in some cases, it serves as a way to deliver an ultimatum or a moment of clarity where they are presented with the important choice to enter treatment.

Rehabilitation centres are places for recovery from addiction. Their programmes are structured in a way that gradually introduces the addict back into society after a period of physical, emotional and spiritual healing. Usually, the admission process begins with an extensive questionnaire and a medical examination to determine the addict’s physical condition and get an idea of where they are in their detox process. Depending on the findings of this examination, they may be admitted to a detox programme within the relevant facility or integrated into the recovery community at the treatment centre, where they will attend group and individual therapy sessions.

As part of the admission process, often, addicts will be asked to hand in their phone to the treatment team for safekeeping while they are encouraged to concentrate on recovery for an appropriate amount of time. Visiting times and frequencies will be agreed upon with family and friends, according to the admission rules of the relevant treatment centre. Rehabilitation centres each have their own set of rules that apply to the treatment programme – these rules will be stated upfront as part of the admission process.
