Women In Recovery

24 August, 2018Articles, News

Women often ask themselves, why is it so difficult to recover? Why is it so difficult for women to get clean or come into treatment? Most importantly, why is it difficult for women to stay clean?

Women coming into recovery often already feel uncomfortable confronting and being open about their disease. Why is this you ask? Women often tend to use drugs or drink for different reasons and they stay clean for different reasons. These reasons can often be associated with certain aspects of their lives. Examples of these can be that they have experienced a trauma early in their lives, are suffering from major self-esteem issues such as weight loss or body image issues, being hurt by men in their relationships, and the list goes on. Or maybe they just want to be a good mother to their children or a good wife to their husbands, but the stresses associated with this can often lead to a deep embedded fear that they may never be good enough or are failing at what they have been put on this earth to do. This could be the reason that so many women get pulled into the deep, dark world of drugs and alcohol just so that they can feel better about themselves.

Women often end up with many other addictions, and often develop eating disorders because of self-esteem issues and insecurities. Along with issues such as love addiction or co-dependency.

Why is it difficult for women to recover from substance abuse issues? Women are seemingly expected to conform to certain requirements in society, and this can lead to immense pressure for them to perform better or be the perfect wife or mother. Often women will come into recovery for the wrong reasons. They want to keep their marriage, they want to keep custody of their kids, or they have become so engrossed in the revolving circle of depression and self-esteem issues, that they want to change they just don’t know how. Often a cause for relapse in women is that they pick up weight in recovery and they end up not liking the way they look so they end up going back to the drugs in order to lose the weight again.

Women are often more intimidated than men, partly due to trust and self-esteem issues. This is part of the reason why it is sometimes incredibly difficult for them to open up to a sponsor or attend meetings, situations that force them to be vulnerable. NA or AA meetings often have a greater attendance of men than women, which may intimidate a lady coming to her first meeting looking for a safe space. However, both the NA and AA fellowships have dedicated women’s meetings. These fellowships have recognized the need for women to have a dedicated space where they can deal with issue that they may not feel comfortable bringing forward when there are men around.

How can we change this? Empower women to change. Let them know that it is ok to not be ok. Women should be open-minded and willing to explore other meetings in order to find a place that they feel comfortable with sharing their issues. Women need to learn to love themselves and positively encourage each other. Women can, and do recover.

The Beauty of a 12 Step Program

17 August, 2018Articles, News

Addiction is defined as a disease by most medical associations, including the American Medical Association and the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

The disease of addiction is a chronic, progressive and terminal illness.

Without treatment and constant management of the illness, addiction will progress and result in self destruction and possibly death.

A 12-Step program is a very effective way to manage the disease of addiction.

As part of a long-term recovery, the program is based on the 5 Pillars of Recovery. The 5 Pillars have been proven to be effective for chemical dependency, co-dependency, depression, grief and loss, eating disorders and behavioural disorders such as gambling. When clients relapse, it is usually because they have not made all 5 of the Pillars part of their lives. There is more to recovery then just the 5 Pillars, yet in my experience, the possibility of relapse is minimised if all of the 5 Pillars are actively pursued.

The 5 Pillars

1. Regular meeting attendance
2. Acceptance of a higher power
3. Sponsor
4. 12 Steps (step work)
5. Service to others

1) At Crossroads Recovery Centre, clients are taken to three outside meetings (Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous) and also required to partake in two in-house meetings on the premises. This is an opportunity for them to connect with others who are actively pursuing their recovery and to get guidance and support with their struggles. Meetings cover variety of topics and will sometimes have a dedicated speaker for the evening. This is a chance for members in attendance to learn more about how the program works as well as a forum to carry a message of hope to others.

2) It is important for an addict to turn their lives over to a Higher Power of their understanding. The 12 Step program is essentially a spiritual program and spiritual groups, prayer and meditation is at the core of our treatment program at Crossroads. The definition of a Higher Power often varies from person to person, but AA and NA do not subscribe to, or endorse any religion or lack thereof. People of all belief systems and faiths are welcome, no one will ever be turned away because of their beliefs.

3) Getting a sponsor after treatment is vital. A sponsor acts as a guide for the journey through the 12 steps, as well as acting as a mentor and forms an important part of a recovering persons support structure. Our philosophy is based on the philosophy of one addict helping another. All our counsellors are not only professionally qualified counsellor, they are also recovering addicts with over 100 years of clean time. The benefits of one addict helping another is so valuable because not only do our counsellors, and the sponsors working in 12 step fellowships, fully believe and live by what they preach, they offer support from a place of mutual understanding.
The counsellor guides the clients through the 12 Steps whilst in treatment and thereafter clients are encouraged and assisted to get their own recovery sponsor.

4) The 12 Steps is a written spiritual program which deals with all aspects of addiction. Namely, denial, powerlessness, unmanageability, coming to believe in a higher power, personal inventory, defects, amends, forgiveness, guilt, shame and trauma are only some of the issues covered. Written Step work is the core of the 12 steps program and clients are required to spend much of their lime on this crucial process. Stepwork is an opportunity to critically look at the behaviours, attitudes, and pre-conceived ideas that lead to a person seeking help. It is an opportunity to challenge our thinking, getting to the root of a problem that may in the past not have been given much thought.

5) Clients are required to be of service in the house whilst in treatment and are actively encouraged to become sponsors themselves upon completing the 12 Steps. Service is a corner stone of the 12-step programs. Being not for profit institutes, and being almost entirely run by volunteer involvement, the 12 step programs only exist because recovering addicts put their time and energy into service to keep the doors to the meetings open. Being of service to others and carrying a message to fellow addicts is what helps keeps a person clean and sober.

Coming into a fellowship can be intimidating and confusing for someone who has never been part of a support group before. A lot of what we do at Crossroad Recovery Centre is based around the 12 steps and 12 step groups because it is such an effective way for a person to have long term support in their recovery. It is a way for a person to keep bettering themselves, long after they have left a treatment facility.

Addiction @ 20

13 August, 2018Articles, News

Just Having Fun

When it comes to dealing with addiction most people don’t know what to do, especially teenagers and young adults. It may just seem like they’re just enjoying their youth, living their life and using drugs and/or alcohol to relate to their peers. Until that person suffers a lot of consequences, they won’t see the problem with their consumption of alcohol or drugs. To a teenager or young adult it may seem like they’re just having fun and there is nothing wrong with that. Or it could be that they are using to fill a void, that they are somehow misunderstood and the only way to feel like they have a sense of belonging is by using with their friends and doing whatever they can to fit in.

Addiction  is about more than the substance, it is a problem with the state of being or how a person views them self and the world. Because of the lack of knowledge and education in our communities about addiction, a lot of addicts do not get the help that they need and a lot of those people are teenagers and young adults.

Unmanageability Happens So Fast

The results of drug and alcohol abuse may only appear when they are much older. But in some cases, teenagers and young adults find themselves in the depths of addiction, having to seek help at what seems to be a young age. This would mean that the consequences of their lifestyle has gotten to a point where their lives are unmanageable. This is termed as outward unmanageability. Where inward unmanageability is the reason they use in the first place. Inward unmanageability is the constant feeling of not being good enough or unable to fit in at a social setting, such as school or other social situations.

When the outward unmanageability presents itself at such an early age, most teens and young adults are written off as “bad apples” and have to face the consequences. But the problem lies in the lack of knowledge as to what is wrong with them. Why do they behave the way that they do? Most of the time schools and society are not interested in that question. They would rather write them off and work with the ones that are easier to work with. This only makes the situation worse. If help is sought out at this stage, when their life seems to be going off the rails, the chances of them changing their lives are high, because it is very evident that there is something wrong here but no one seems to know what it is or what to do.

Too Young?

Rehabilitation at this stage of a person’s life, given that they have suffered enough consequences and the unmanageability is evident, can help change their life for the better. Even if it may seem like they are too young to go to rehab. There are cases where teens and young adults destroy their lives at such a rapid pace that the idea of rehabilitation is not too far off.

Some cases may not be so easy to deal with, when it comes to rehabilitating teens and young adults. In some cases the family will force these individuals to go to treatment when the individual does not see their substance abuse as a problem. The denial may be that, it’s recreational or that it’s not a big deal, they can cope. This means that the individual has not suffered a lot of consequences and the outward unmanageability is not very evident to them. Cases like these seem to be more resistant to the idea of rehabilitation. That does not mean that treatment is not required.

Being young is not an excuse as to why one should not go to rehab. Addiction varies, it affects people in different ways and at different paces. So do not write off the idea of treatment just because you or your loved ones are still young and “experimenting”. When things seem like they are going out of control, intervene before it’s too late

Not according to prescription

03 August, 2018Articles, News

Prescription medicine is indicated to provide relief for specific medical conditions. According to the substance prescribed, a schedule is allocated to make the public aware of the risk factors associated with the substance. This is indicated on the container of the medicine and patients should be aware that from S5 the substance in the medicine is indicative of being potentially addictive and prescriptions for these medicines should be renewed every 6 months.  Legal requirements are not adhered to by doctors or pharmacists and the monetary value for these professionals, outweigh the patients risks of becoming addicted to these medicines.

An over the counter cough or flu mixture containing codeine can cause dependence within seven days and can cause major sickness in overcoming this. Codeine causes organ failure with extended use. Most common is the cough syrup Broncleer which contains codeine and is considered to be the most abused over the counter drug in South Africa. Codeine, is from the opioid family, along with heroin and morphine, and is also found in a range of other medications. This includes, but is not limited to, Myprodol and Mybulen, Benylin C, Syndol, AdcoDol, Tensodol, Sinutab C, and Sinumax Co.

Other Commonly Abused Medicines:

Benzodiazepines such as alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), and clonazepam (Klonopin)

Barbiturates such as such as pentobarbital (Nembutal), mephobarbital (Mebaral), and phenobarbital (Luminal)

Stimulant medications such as methylphenidate (Concerta, Ritalin) and dextroamphetamine (Adderall, Dexedrine).

Diet medicine, Obesan,Duromine, Relislim.

One feature of prescription drug abuse is when a person continues to take the drug after it’s no longer needed. This is usually because the drug produces a euphoric responses. Prescription drugs are often preferred for abuse because of the mistaken belief that the drugs provide a “safe high”

Opioid misuse/abuse is responsible for about 75% of overdose-related deaths. That’s more than any other prescription or illegal drug.

Prevention of medicine abuse includes taking prescription medicine only as directed by your doctor, never share prescription medicine and do not take medication prescribed for someone else. So-called “Pharming Parties” are popular with teens whereby everyone brings medication from home, mix them and drink, smoke or snort them, causing severe side effects and possibly death.

Most important prevention starts with yourself, read the labels of medicine and be aware of the real danger of getting addicted to medicine. It by no means differs from illegal substance abuse!
